One Stop Survey
In the summer of 2003 Public Technology, Inc (PTI), in partnership with
the National League of Cities (NLC), the National Association of Counties
(NACo), the International City/County Management Association (ICMA),
and the U.S. Department of the Interior, conducted a national survey
that examines how local governments are using geographic information
technologies. The final survey analysis as well as a web-based interactive
reporting tool that local governments can use to compare their GIS operations
with other governments are now available online.

Loses Public-Records Case
January 6 article published in Greenwhich Time detailing the lose of
an appeal by the Town of Greenwhich to not have to release Geographic
Information Systems data under the Freedom of Information Act. The town
unsuccessfully argued that the release of this information which included
locational information on infrastructure and schools was a matter of
security.

Certification
The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI, www.gisci.org) has announced
that the GIS Certification Program went "live" on January
1, 2004. GIS professionals will be able to download application materials
and begin preparations for submitting their qualifications for recognition
as Certified GIS Professionals and earn the designation, "GISP".

USGS
Adds New Flood Maps
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has posted new maps on the Internet
showing basins with the greatest potential for producing mudslides
as a result of the devastating October fires in Southern California.
The new maps show the probability for debris-flow (mudslide) activity
and estimates of the peak discharge from drainage basins burned by
the Old and Grand Prix Fires near San Bernardino and the Piru, Simi
and Verdale Fires near Simi Valley and Fillmore.
